It is heart wrenching and totally bizarre when 7-year old girl told policemen that her grandparents, who accused her of killing her father, beat her everyday and used light rubber materials to burn various parts of her body
She disclosed this on Tuesday, when she summoned courage and walked up to a Police man who stays on the same street as she does in the Awa-Ijebu part of Ogun State and narrated her ordeal on how she had been mistreated and abused.
Her grandfather, 57-year-old Joseph Akporugo, and his wife, Janet have both been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for maltreating and abusing the orphan.
An initial investigation revealed that the victim is Akporugo’s granddaughter, and her maltreatment began when her father died and she was accused of killing him through witchcraft.
Then she moved in and started living with her grandfather and his wife as a result of her biological father’s demise.
Speaking in Yoruba, the orphan described the abuse she was made to undergo each day:
“They beat me every day, accusing me of being a witch.
“These wounds (pointing to her stomach) were inflicted on me by them. They put a rubber on the fire and placed it on my stomach and other parts of my body.”
Confirming the arrest, a spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said that the Constable she reported to, took her to Awa-Ijebu Police Station where the case was incidented.
“The DPO, CSP Adewalehinmi, subsequently detailed detectives to the couple’s house and they were promptly arrested.
“On interrogation, the couple were unable to justify their devilish maltreatment of the innocent little girl.
“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered a proper investigation into the case with a view to diligently prosecuting the suspects.”
