President Tinubu Elected As ECOWAS Chairman

The Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected on Sunday as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

President Tinubu was elected at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), held in Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

The ECOWAS Chairman said after his election, “We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very tough but it is the best form of government.”

Meanwhile, Presidents and leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his election as President of Nigeria.

The Regional Leaders gave their congratulatory messages during the opening ceremony of the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, taking place in Guinea-Bissau.

The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who is hosting the conference thanked Nigeria for the sustenance of peace and strengthening of democracy in the West African region.

He stated that the military seizure of power in Mali, the Republic of Guinea, and Burkina Faso and the subsequent elongation of the transition period represent a regression of the values of democratic rule of law adopted by member states through the supplementary protocol on democracy and good governance.

He stressed that the return of democracy in the three countries was imperative for political stability, the promotion of the democratic rule of law, and the well-being of the people of the West African sub-region.

The Guinea-Bissau President emphasized
the need for member countries to consider other ways of mobilising financial resources from each member state with strategic partners to counter terrorism and speed up the economic growth of the region.

On his part, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Toura stated that on behalf of the community and institutions, he is congratulating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his election and assumption of office as the President of Nigeria, which is the biggest economy and country in Africa.

Mr Omar Toura also thanked the Guinea-Bissau President, Umaro Embaló for his leadership as chair of ECOWAS in the past twelve months.

He said that the community has recorded several achievements to be discussed at the meeting.

The ECOWAS Commission President also congratulated the President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, on his re-election.
